AlumniLeaving a gift in your Will
How legacy gifts make a difference
Leaving a gift in your Will can be a powerful way to make a positive impact on the future of education and research. By doing so, you can help support the next generation of students who will be the innovators, leaders, and problem solvers of tomorrow.
Your gift can provide financial assistance to students who may not have the means to pursue higher education otherwise, allowing them to gain knowledge, skills and experience that can lead to rewarding careers and meaningful contributions to society.

Your support in action
Recent gifts have supported:
- a special scholarship programme for students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds
- a hardship fund for teacher training
- scholarships for the Engineering Academy
- redevelopment of University buildings, including Andersonian Library and Biomedical Engineering
- emerging enterprise, through Strathclyde Entrepreneurs Fund.
It is important to seek legal advice to help you to prepare your Will and a solicitor can advise you on the wording. You should also consider what you would like your gift to achieve and might want to consider the following:
- supporting an area you are passionate about - a field of study/research, or a particular area such as supporting disadvantaged students.
- helping the university respond to the most pressing need by helping where the need is greatest.
Types of legacy gifts
- a share of your estate (a residuary gift)
- a fixed amount of money (a pecuniary gift)
The gift that holds its value the most is a residuary one. Giving in this way means inflation doesn't erode the value of the gift in the way it does with cash gifts.
The University of Strathclyde is a registered charity and any legacy gift to a charity is deducted from the value of your estate before inheritance tax is calculated.
The University welcomes the opportunity to commemorate a loved one through support for a named undergraduate scholarship.
An undergraduate scholarship is made possible with a gift of £5,000 and will support a young person from a disadvantaged area to come to Strathclyde. Read more about our scholarship programmes.
Alumni based in the USA also have the option to include the University of Strathclyde in their Will.
