University website & Microsoft Office changes

As part of our commitment to keep the University website safe and secure for all visitors, we will be removing the ability to upload Microsoft Office documents that have been created using the old "97 - 2003" format.

Documents of this type are more at risk of being embedded with malicious code than the current Microsoft Office format which is now widely supported.

The restrictions will be put in place on 28th February 2019, and covers the following file extensions for Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents:

.doc, .xls, .ppt

Documents created using the current Office format can still be uploaded.

This covers the following file extensions for Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents:

.docx, .xlsx, pptx

Any documents that have previously been uploaded using the older format will remain but we will be conducting an audit of actively used documents and contacting document owners to update their content to an approved file format.

For guidance on how to convert an existing document from the old format to the current standard, please follow the steps provided on our Cyber Security web pages

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please don't hesitate to contact us.
